  4. Answering five deaths, Israel deports hundreds of Palestinians

  7.     For Palestinians living in the occupied territories,
  8. deportations of their brethren evoke fears that one day the
  9. Israelis will expel them all from their homes. So it was on
  10. Friday, when Israeli authorities deported to Lebanon more than
  11. 400 alleged activists from the Muslim fundamentalist movements
  12. Hamas and Islamic Jihad. The expulsions were in retaliation for
  13. the shooting of four Israeli soldiers and the Hamas'
  14. kidnap-murder of a border policeman. In the Gaza Strip, at
  15. weekend demonstrations to protest the expulsions, six
  16. Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli troops.

  18.     The U.N. Security Council condemned the deportations,
  19. contending that they violated the Geneva Conventions. The
  20. expulsions also threatened the Middle East peace talks. In fact,
  21. warned the P.L.O., the Palestinian delegation will quit
  22. negotiations if the deportations are not reversed. Israelis and
  23. Palestinians in the territories are bracing for more trouble.
  24. Hamas has sworn to avenge the deportations, a likely trigger for
  25. another heavy Israeli reaction.
